This neglect is one of the reasons for the creation of
MusiCares, a charitable foundation which began with a
major national outdoor advertising campaign sending a
strong, direct message to the public, and our own
industry, about the dangers of substance abuse. Over 8,000
billboards showcased recording artists like Paula Abdul,
Gloria Estefan, Young MC and David Crosby, warning about drug
and alcohol misuse. Over 25,000 referral calls were logged
as a result of this campaign, in which the Recording Academy
was joined by the Federal Office of Substance Abuse Prevention
and the Entertainment Industry Council.
Fund-raising efforts this year include the gala event held
February 22 at New York's Waldorf Astoria honoring
Bonnie Raitt as MusiCares Person of the Year. (Also
performing at the tribute to Bonnie were Natalie Cole,
David Crosby, Charles Brown and others.) In addition to
the long-range development of a system similar to the
highly acclaimed Motion Picture Health and Welfare Fund,
these funds are being used to support the following
MusiCares programs and services:
